Mobile equipment repair in Nassau County

Timber repair, where the machines are nowhere near a paved road.

Callahan calls itself the Crossroads to the Future, and geographically that is exactly what it is. US 1, which also carries US 23, meets US 301 here, along with SR 200 and the northern terminus of A1A. SR 115 comes up from southeast Jacksonville and ends just south of town. Two CSX subdivisions run through as well.

The town's own description of its economy is short and accurate: timber and agriculture, plus one of the largest mulch manufacturing operations in the country. Nassau County's biggest freight movement by an enormous margin is lumber and wood products, over a million tons of it a year by truck. That means log trucks, skidders, knuckleboom loaders and landing equipment.

It is a different kind of work to a subdivision job site. Timber equipment operates in the woods, on soft ground, a long way from a paved road, and it operates hard. When a skidder goes down at the back of a tract, hauling it out is a bigger job than the repair. That is exactly the situation a service truck is for.

No exit number here either. Callahan has no interstate exit of its own. It is reached on US 1, US 301, SR 200 and A1A, or off I-95 exit 373 and I-10 exit 343 depending on which way you are coming.

What we fix

What we fix in Callahan: equipment, diesel trucks and boat engines.

Seven services, all of them live in Callahan. Each has its own page if you want the detail before you call.

Local ground

The Callahan ground a service truck covers

The pits, yards and job sites our Callahan equipment repair calls come from.

01

The US 1 and US 301 crossroads

The centre of town and the reason it exists. Everything moving between Jacksonville, the Georgia line and the coast passes through it.

02

SR 200 east

The road toward Yulee and I-95 exit 373. The usual approach from our side of the region.

03

SR 115 south

Running down toward southeast Jacksonville, and the route a lot of local traffic uses to reach the city.

04

The timber tracts

Working woods across west Nassau, including ground around Four Creeks State Forest. Soft, remote and hard on equipment.

05

The mulch and wood products operations

Callahan hosts one of the country's larger mulch manufacturing plants, with the yard equipment and inbound truck traffic that implies.

06

Crawford Diamond Industrial Park

Over eighteen hundred acres of rail served industrial ground with both CSX and Norfolk Southern frontage, out toward the Callahan area.

Who calls us

The crews we keep working near Callahan

Who runs diesel equipment around Callahan, and what a heavy equipment mechanic sees on it.

Logging contractors

Skidders, feller bunchers, knuckleboom loaders and log trucks working ground that is nowhere near a paved road.

Wood products and mulch operations

Yard loaders, grinders and material handlers running continuously on abrasive, stringy material that eats bearings and hydraulics.

Trucking on the crossroads

Four highways meeting means a lot of freight. Roadside diesel repair on US 1 and US 301 is regular work.

Land clearing crews

Mulchers and clearing equipment working the tracts between timber cycles and ahead of development.

Farms and rural operators

Agriculture is named alongside timber as the town's main industry. Tractors, trucks and implement repair.

County crews

Nassau County has a government annex in the design stage on Page Street, and road and drainage work across the western side of the county.

  • A number that gets answered on site
How a call goes

What happens when you call a mobile diesel mechanic in Callahan.

STEP 01

You call

Tell us the machine, the symptom and where it sits. We ask a few questions so the right parts come with us.

STEP 02

We tell you straight

Field job or shop job, and roughly when we can be there. If we are too far out to help today, you hear it on the first call.

STEP 03

We diagnose on site

Pressures, codes, readings. You get the actual cause and a number before a wrench turns on the repair.

STEP 04

Back to work

We fix it, test it under load and clean up. You get told what failed and what to watch so it does not happen twice.

Questions we get

Questions we get from Callahan about heavy equipment repair.

Does Callahan have an interstate exit?
No. It is a US highway crossroads, on US 1 and US 23, US 301, SR 200 and the north end of A1A. Depending on direction we come off I-95 exit 373 or I-10 exit 343 and run in from there.
How long does it take you to reach Callahan?
About an hour on a typical run. It means getting across or around Jacksonville, so the time of day matters as much as the mileage.
Do you repair logging equipment in the woods?
Yes, and it is a lot of what we do out here. Skidders, loaders and feller bunchers on soft ground far from a road. Tell us about access when you call, because that is what decides how we come.
What if the ground is too soft for a service truck?
Then we work out how to get to the machine safely, which sometimes means the machine or the truck moves first. We would rather solve that on the phone than turn up and find out.
Do you do roadside repair on US 1 and US 301?
Yes. It is a heavy freight corridor with a lot of timber and aggregate traffic, and roadside diesel work is regular.
Do you service the mulch and wood products yards?
Yes. Yard loaders, grinders and material handlers, which live a hard life in stringy abrasive material. Hydraulics, bearings and cooling take the brunt of it.
Can you work at Crawford Diamond Industrial Park?
Yes. It is rail served industrial ground with both CSX and Norfolk Southern frontage, and equipment there is inside our normal service area.
Do you cover Hilliard and the rest of west Nassau?
Yes, Hilliard has its own page and we run the same roads. Tell us where you are and we will give you a real answer about timing.
